The Fiat 500 story

Launched in July 1957, the Fiat 500 was born for Italian city streets with a 479 cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine. Production ran for only 18 years, from 1957 to 1975, with the 500 going through several different versions throughout its lifespan.

The original car – called the 500D – featured rear-hinged ‘suicide’ doors, but these were replaced with conventional doors on the 1965 to 1968 model: the Fiat 500F. There were other cosmetic upgrades as well as a (slightly) more powerful engine.

From 1968 to 1972 the Fiat 500L (or Lusso) was made. This featured extra chrome bumpers, better upholstery, and a revised dashboard as well as steering wheel. Other luxuries included reclining seats and carpeting. The final 500, from 1972 to 1975, was called the 500R (or ‘rinnovata’, which means ‘renewed’). The major innovation was a new gearbox.

And that’s where the story ended, until Fiat decided to produce the current car from 2007. Yet nothing beats the Italianate charm of the original.

Our story

Real Italian  Cars was born out of passion.

We are a group of friends, resident in Italy and London, who enjoy driving all sorts of cars but have a particular love for the Fiat 500. You only have to drive one to understand why: with an unmistakeable profile, ingenuous design, peppy engine, and go-anywhere ability, the 500 is the quintessential Italian automotive export.

Our Team.

We are Amedeo, Anthony, and Mattia: we all live in the beautiful province of Tuscany and have a base in London too. We’ve all got a passion for cars and driving – from the fastest cars in the world to the smallest. Mattia is a rally driver, Anthony works in Formula 1, and Amedeo is an artist and property developer who has driven more Fiat 500s than your average Fiat test driver.
